Spring has sprung in Rabat

ラバトにも春

I hear news of cheery blossom season arriving in Japan 🙂 My favorite season over there, and sure sign of spring. Even though I don’t see many cherry trees here, it seems like that spring is definitely arriving in Rabat as well! 🌸

日本から『桜頼り』が聞こえる今日この頃。ラバトにも着実に”春”が訪れてきているようです。
These pictures are from Jardin d’essais botaniques in our neighborhood. We often visit there for walks and outdoor yoga classes. It’s a beautiful place throughout the year.

こちらは、よくウォーキングや野外ヨガクラスで足を運んでいる庭園。年間を通して、すごく綺麗な場所です。

The wisteria blossoms are especially gorgeous now. While walking the other day, I smelled “curry” and I thought someone must have eaten curry for a picnic or something. Then at a different spot (inside the garden) I smelled curry again. Hmm? After checking out some suspicious plants around that spot, I discovered that there was a “curry plant” growing in that area. They look like rosemary bush, but the scent is definitely curry. Namaste. 🍛

藤の花もきれいです。そして、お散歩中「だれかここでカレーでも食べたのかな？」という香りがしてきたと思ったら、あそこも、ここも、カレーの匂い！調べてみると、この『カレープラント』というものが存在するんですねぇ。見た目まるでローズマリーのようなんですが、香りが完全にカレーでした。ナマステ。

Mesmerizing lotus flowers in the pond. There were some ‘jumping actions’ – sure enough, a couple of frogs were also enjoying the gorgeous spring weather (and many, many tiny little fishes, too – maybe they were tadpoles?). Can you see? 🐸

池には美しいハスの花。何かジャンプしているので覗き込むと、やっぱりいました、カエルさん（と、小さな小さなお魚さんたち。おたまじゃくしさんもいたかも）見えますか？

A loquat tree near our apartment with fruits hanging so abundantly. I’m not sure if these particular ones are edible or not, but it just makes me happy to see a loquat tree. You know, loquats can be VERY expensive in Japan. Well, I will not harvest these loquat fruits; I will just buy them at haunt soon!

アパート近くにある、ビワの木。この種が食べられるかどうか疑問ですが、あの高級ビワがこんなふうにたわわになっているのが見れるのは嬉しい。もうすぐ、お店にも「食べれるビワ」が登場してきそう～。楽しみです。

Our lanai seems to have welcomed spring also 🙂 The plant with these pink flowers is apparently called “Beefsteak Begonia.” Beefsteak, eh? 🥩 How about these rather interesting shaped flowers? Their name, “Cathedral Bells.” 🔔

そして、我が家のラナイにも春が。こちらのピンクのお花は、その名も『ビーフステーキ·ベゴニア』と呼ばれるそうです。ビーフステーキ？また、ちょっと面白い鐘のような形のお花は『カテドラル·ベル』。

The arrival of spring also means the arrival of mosquitoes! 🦟 For whatever reason, I tend to attract mosquitoes a lot (too much) and I really need to find ways to prevent myself from being bitten by them. Since screens on windows aren’t common in Morocco, my husband put up this net (punched in Lisbon) for me! It has magnets in the middle for easy entry/exit, but since it was a little too short for our window, I added some thin cloth as well.

『春到来』と言うことは、イコール、『蚊がやってくる季節到来』でもあります。なぜか蚊にすっごく愛されてしまう私。でも、網戸というものが通常存在しないモロッコでして、そんな中、旦那さんがこのような網を張ってくれました！真ん中が磁石になっていて行き来しやすいんですが、ちょーっと長さが足らなかったので薄めの布をたしました。

I am so very thankful to my lovely husband for always going for walks with me and for installing the net screen 🙂 🙏

いつも一緒にお散歩に行ってくれる、そして、簡単網戸をとりつけてくれる旦那さんに、心から感謝です！

Eid al-Fitr is here!

イード·アル·フィトルがやってきました！

Good morning from Rabat, on a special day! This morning, the feast can start for many Moroccans. They said “goodbye” to this year’s Ramadan, and today, apparently, it’s actually forbidden to fast! Meaning, they are encouraged to eat (I like that!). Eat with family, eat with neighbors, eat with friends… such a joyous morning, yes? It reminds me of Japanese oshogatsu, morning of new year, when we get together and eat traditional meals, feeling thankful & hopeful.

ラバトからおはようございます。今朝はモロッコの人たちにとって特別な朝、ラマダンを終えた今日の朝食は、まさに「祝賀会」なのです。なんとこの日は、今までの３０日間とうってかわって【断食禁止】なのだとか。つまり、家族や隣人、お友達と一緒にしっかり食べてしっかりお祝いしましょうという日なのです。なんとなく、日本のお正月と似ている気がします。

This “festival of breaking fast” comes with prayers. I have been hearing beautiful chants from mosques, or even from the streets throughout the morning. No more cannons though – as they don’t need to be heard to tell us the end of fasting every night.

そして断食明けのお祭りは、食べるだけではなく、お祈りもおおがかり。昨日の夜からずっと、モスクや街角から美しい詠唱が聞こえてきます。ラマダン中、断食の時間終了を伝える大砲の音が鳴っていたのですが、そちらとはまた１年間お別れ。

Many ladies and children get dressed in the most beautiful Jellabas or Caftans for the Eid. Some get Hennas done (I was lucky to have it done, too!), hair done, nails done… ya, they have all prepared for this big day 🙂 Men also wear the traditional robes with hats – and have many cups of mint tea 🙂

たくさんの女性や子供達が、この日のために綺麗な装いをします。ジェラバやカフタンなどを着飾って、うっとり～。先週くらいから、ヘナ（私も便乗！）や髪の毛のセットやネイルなど、、、で準備万端。男性も伝統衣装に身をまとってかっこいい。そしてたっくさんのミントティを飲むのです。

As I passed another Ramadan in Morocco, as a foreigner, I can only feel one thing; gratitude. It is a time that I can learn more about Moroccan people and their culture. Ramadan teaches me how strong humans can be by being able to fast, how important it is to care for others (especially those who are in need), and how beautiful it is to live in a diverse, coexisting community.

今年もモロッコで迎えたラマダン。ここに住む外国人として感じているのはただひとつ、「感謝の気持ち」。ラマダンは、モロッコの人々と文化についてより深く学ぶことができる貴重な時間です。断食を通して、人間の強さ、他者（特に困っている人々）を思いやることの大切さ、そして多様性を尊重し共存するコミュニティで生きることの素晴らしさを、などを、ラマダンの期間から学べるんです。

I am so grateful to live in Morocco. そして、「モロッコに住めて幸せ」と思えるのが嬉しい☺️。

Eid Mubarak Said! May the goodness of today stay in you and never leave. イードおめでとう！(ラマダン、おつかれさまでした)

5 fun facts about Portugal – Lisbon Days (part 3)

ポルトガル、面白いところ５つ

Some fun facts I learned about Portugal. Maybe you find them interesting, too!

今でも思い出すポルトガルのもろもろ、、、を記しておきます。

1) The president of Portugal loves selfies. ポルトガルのプレジデントは、セルフィーがお好き。

His name is Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He is known to enjoy taking selfies and is very happy to click with anyone wherever he goes! He looks like a very kind person, doesn’t he? This “president’s passion for selfies” now has a special name: #Marcelfie. Instagram, Facebook, you will find great pics on social media. We didn’t get to meet him this time, but I pretended we did…

彼の名はMarcelo Rebelo de Sousa。自撮りが大好きで、どこに行っても心よく一緒にセルフィーしてくれるんだそうです。とっても気の優しい方だそうです。よって『マーセルフィー』と言う言葉まで生まれ、サイトやインスタもあるのだとか、、、。今回、私たちはプレジデントに出会えませんでしたが、ちょっと作ってみましたぁ。

2) Huh? Golden Gate Bridge in Lisbon? あれ？サンフランシスコ？のような赤い橋がある。

If you only looked at this photo, you might think, “That’s San Francisco, right?” This bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril, 25th of April Bridge) connects Lisbon with the town along the Taguas River, and it was actually designed to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge by American engineers living in Portugal. Okay, so it was intentionally created “to look-alike.” Red is definitely easy to see in the fogs.

写真だけとったら「え？サンフランシスコにいる？」と思ってしまうこの橋。リスボンとタグアス川沿の街を結んでいるのですが、ちゃんと＜サンフランシスコの橋に似るように＞設計されたそうです。ポルトガルに住むアメリカ人エンジニア達の手によってデザインされたそうですが、赤い色は”霧の中でもよく見えるから”だそうです。

3) Huh? A Jesus that looks like Rio de Janeiro? あれ？リオデジャネイロ？のようなジーザスがいる。

Yes, this Jesus could also make you think, “Huh? Where am I?” While smaller than the statue in Rio de Janeiro (apparently the Lisbon statue is about 2 meters shorter if you only compare the figures of Christ), the wide-open arms were still visible from afar.

はい、こちらも「え？今どこにいる？」となりかねないこのキリスト様。本場リオデジャネイロの像よりは小さめ（キリスト様だけで比べると、リスボンの方が２メートルほど低いらしい）ですが、大きく手を開いている様子は、遠くからも眺めることができました。

4) Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork! コルク生産高は世界一！

Cork is essential for bottles, such as wine bottles. I found out that Portugal is said to be the world’s largest producer of cork. That explains why even the subway seats were made of it! By the way, they were quite comfortable, and I bet they are easy to clean. You can find many souvenirs made with cork all over Lisbon, which I didn’t buy any.

ワインなど瓶にはかかせないコルク。ポルトガルはこのコルクの生産では世界いちなんだそうです。と言うことで、地下鉄の椅子もコルクでした。座り心地もなかなか良かったです。そういえば、街中でコルクを使ったお土産（コースター、バッグ、などなど）が並んでおりました。

5) Fado is like the world of Japanese Enka (traditional Japanese ballads). ファドは、演歌の世界。

Fado is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. There are many “Fado bars” in Lisbon, but when I asked a local, they said Fado is “songs that convey saudade (melancholy), full of complaints.” They also said, “That’s just the nature of the Portuguese.” You know what I think? It definitely has the same vibe as Japanese Enka songs. 

ユネスコの無形文化財にも指定されたファド。リスボンの街にもいろいろな「ファド喫茶」がありますが、地元の方に聞いたところ、ファドは『サウダーデ（哀愁）を伝える、文句タラタラな歌』だそうです。『ポルトガル人にはそういう気質があるんだよぉ～』とも言っていましたが、ああぁ、なんとも日本の演歌な世界だわぁ。

Mysterious Sintra – Lisbon Days (part 2)

なんとも不思議なシントラ

Lisbon is a city of just the right size to explore on foot (if you don’t mind the ups and downs of the hills). Since we had a whole day free, we decided to visit Sintra, the village everyone talks about…
with mysterious palaces.

リスボンは徒歩で観光できる（坂道事情をよく把握すれば）ほどよい大きさの街。滞在中、丸一日空いたので、「ウワサのシントラに行ってみようかぁ」となりました。そう、＜ウワサ＞と言うのは『不思議な宮殿がある街』です。

It was originally a hilltop village favored as a summer retreat by royalty and the wealthy. Many package tours depart from Lisbon to visit Sintra, but we decided to do independently by train and Uber so that we could have more freedom to get around.

もともと、王家やお金持ちさん達の避暑地として好まれた高台の村。中にはムーア人が作った城壁などもあるらしい。リスボンからもたくさんのツアーが組まれているようでしたが、自由人な私たち夫婦は、電車などを使って個人的に行ってまいりました。

First visit: Pena Palace. Timed entry tickets necessary. It used to be a monastery, but was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Later, it was transformed into a palace by King Ferdinand II (AKA, “Artist King”- consort of Queen Maria II). Strangely, its original chapel remained intact and still stands today. A very sacred place.

時間設定されたチケットでまずはペーナ宮殿へ。もともとは修道院だった場所が1755年の大地震で廃墟。その後、女王マリア2世の王配フェルナンド2世の手によって宮殿となったそうです。不思議なことに、地震後も礼拝堂は無傷だったそうで、今でも訪問可能。なかなか神聖な場所でした。

This palace’s architectural style puzzled me. Is it Renaissance? Gothic? or even Islamic? Or was it just designed solely based on the image of a fairy tale land? Of course, it definitely features the uniquely Portuguese Manuel style (influenced by the Age of Discovery, incorporating various natural and nautical motifs; the spiral columns, numerous arches, and abruptly protruding towers are particularly interesting), but, overall, it was a buffet of architectural styles.

この建築様式は一見の価値あり。ルネサンス様式なのか、ゴシック様式なのか、はたまたイスラム様式かと思えば、もちろんポルトガルならではのマルエル様式（大航海時代の影響で、さまざまな自然のモチーフや航海関係のモチーフがデザインとして使われる。螺旋状の柱、たくさんのアーチ、急に飛び出す塔なども面白い。）もしっかり見ることができます。

ANYWAY. As it was the royal summer palace, we could peek extremely gorgeous bedrooms, a huge kitchen, and a well-ventilated terrace. 王家の夏の離宮、と言うことで、寝室やキッチン、風通しの良さそうなテラスなどが見れます。

Old palaces always seem to have a very nice “smoking room,” don’t they? They must have taken smoking very seriously…昔の宮殿って、かならず「スモーキングルーム」がありますよねぇ。しかもかなりゴージャスな喫煙所。

So, this Triton statue. Very eye-catching, and that’s a very difficult pose to hold (art model point of view). He looks like he’s guarding the castle with great strength, but upon closer inspection, there are quite a few things to criticize (but I didn’t criticize).

目を引かれるトリトンさん。かなり難しいポーズで、なんだか強そうに守っているけど、よく見るとかなりツッコミどころがあります。

Leaving behind this castle with its fairytale-like, yet somewhat unsatisfying feelings, we headed to Quinta da Regaleira. It was about a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride, but beyond that, another uphill climb that would give your legs a good workout.

まるでおとぎ話のお城のような、なんだか納得いかないような、そんなデザインのお城をあとに、次に向かったのはレガレイラ宮殿。トゥクトゥク１０分ほどで到着、ですが、その先はこちらも「足」を鍛えられる坂道。

“Quinta” is an interesting word. It’s a large house in the country, or estate. So, there was more than a castle or palace to explore. To me, Quinta da Regaleira felt like a “grown-up garden built by a super-rich old man who was able to spend his money to his heart’s content.” The castle itself has a rather dingy feel, more like a Haunted Mansion in Disneyland. Within the grounds, there are mystical forests and caves, as well as eerie ponds, mazes, and even a more mysterious, “Well.”

こちらは宮殿、は宮殿なんですが、どちらかと言うと、「大金持ちのおじさんが、お金使いたい放題で作った大人の庭園」と言った感じです。お城自体は薄汚れた感じの、ディズニーの”ホーンテッドマンション”系。敷地内には神秘の森や洞窟があり、怪しい池や迷路、さらに、もう、怪しすぎる井戸もあります。

The official name is “Well of Initiation.” Hmm. This incredibly long well made me think of Dante’s Divine Comedy. It’s 30 meters from top to bottom. Honestly, I was scared of going down. And, it didn’t make me want to initiate anything.

まるでダンテの神曲を思わせるようなこの長ーい井戸。上から下まで３０メートル。正直、降りていくのが怖かったです。

Apparently, Baron Monteiro (who lived here) was a Freemason, and indeed, there are “secret symbols” everywhere. This well was supposedly used for some kind of ritual.

こちらにお住みになっていたモンテイロ男爵は、フリーメーソンの信者だったそう。なるほど、至る所にその「秘密のシンボル」のようなものがあるのです。この井戸も、なにかしらの儀式のために使われていたとか。。。

While I could not stop thinking that “I wouldn’t want to come here alone at night,” it was a very enjoyable place for a daytime stroll.

「ここは夜に1人で来たくないなあぁ。」と思いつつ、でも日中のお散歩コースとしてはとても楽しい場所でした。

Before heading back to Lisbon, we enjoyed some delicious tapas in Sintra’s small downtown area, and bought its famous Queijada (cinnamon-flavored tart) and Traveseiro (a pastry filled with almond cream) from the long-established bakery, Piriquita. We enjoyed them on the platform while waiting for our train back.

リスボンに戻る前に、シントラの繁華街で食べた美味しいタパスを堪能し、シントラ名物のケイジャーダ（シナモン風味のタルト）＆トラベセイロ（アーモンドクリームたっぷり）も老舗ベーカリーPiriquitaにて購入。帰りの電車を待つホームでペロリ。

A little gateway in mysterious Sintra – it’s definitely a great place to visit! という、ちょっと不思議なシントラへのゲータウェイでした。

Egg tart, egg tart, and, more egg tarts! – Lisbon days (part 1)

エッグタルトいっぱいのリスボン日記

Last year, we experienced Ramadan for the first time in Morocco. We learned that many cafés and restaurants were only open for the evenings, streets became a lot quieter, but we started hearing a lot of ‘honking’ in the late afternoon because a lot of people tried to be home before Iftar time, can’t purchase any alcohol, etc. We tend to spend more time at home during Ramadan, which lead to the idea of a “Ramadan Getaway.”

去年モロッコではじめてラマダンを過ごしました。学ぶことたくさん。カフェやレストランは夜だけの営業、街は静かになり、夕方あたりになると、忙しく家路にむかうみなさんのクラクションが聞こえてきたり。そうそう、お酒は全く購入できなくなります。私たち夫婦も、ラマダン中は日中に外で飲食する事はなく、また家の中で過ごすことが増えるのですが、そこで「ラマダン·ゲータウェイ」という案もあがりまして、、、。

So, this year, we went to Lisbon! Just an hour flight was very convenient! And, when you think of Lisbon, of course, you will think of Egg Tarts – yes?

今年はリスボンへ行ってきました。モロッコからは、ほんの1時間のフライトで到着です。リスボンと言えば＜エッグタルト＞でございます～(もちろん、それ以外もございます〜)。
It seems like there are two main “clans” among locals when it comes to this very important question: “which place offers the best egg tarts?” The Pastéis de Belém clan and the Manteigaria clan! I also found out that there are some people who are in the Fábrica da Nata clan.

地元の方達に聞くと、大きく二つに分かれるっぽいのが「どこのエッグタルトが1番美味しいか？」と言う質問に対するお答え。Pastéis de Belém派と、Manteigaria派の対立！ちょっと変わったところで、Fábrica da Nata派も存在するようです。

Of course, we tried all three places! To be honest, they were all equally delicious. It’s amazing how each one is distinctly different though; Belém’s pastry is so light, like angel wings. Manteigaria’s ‘moist and crisp’ balance is superb, and Fabrica’s rich flavor is irresistible.

ちゃーんと３つ食べてきました！正直に言いまして、私にはどれも美味しかったぁ。それぞれユニークさ、オリジナルさもちゃんとあるのがすごい（ベレムのパイ生地感は天使の羽のようだし、マンテイガリアのしっとりさっくりバランスは最高だし、ファブリカの濃厚な味わいも捨てがたい）。

I cannot be a good judge. I loved them all. I can join all three clans. Simply delicious, simply wonderful.

というわけで、私は食レポには向いていない人間でした。どれもただただ美味しい、ただただ幸せ。

Lisbon’s streets, with their beautiful black and white cobblestones (calzada portuguesa), give off a deep sense of history, however, surprisingly, they seem to have been built quite recently (19th century). That’s fine, as long as it’s beautiful. Lisbon is a hilly city, and even though walking around can be exhausting, the beauty of the cobblestones and buildings with gorgeous wall tiles give you extra energy (and more energy from the egg tarts, of course).

リスボンの街は白と黒の石畳（カルサーダ·ポルトゥゲーザ）がきれいで、なんだか深い歴史を感じるぅ～と思ったら、意外と最近作られたもののようです（19世紀）。それでもいい、美しければいい。坂が多い街で、歩いているとヘトヘトになっても、この石畳と壁のタイルの美しさに元気をもらえます(エッグタルトの糖分からも元気をもらえます)。

As good tourists, we made sure to see some of the “quintessential Lisbon” spots. Numerous monuments reflect the history of seafaring.

そして、『ザ·リスボン』な場所もしっかりみてきました。航海の歴史を感じるモニュメントなどなど。

This is the Jerónimos Monastery, constructed by King Manuel I, known as the Golden King. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it incredibly popular (good idea to book a timed entry ticket). Just walking along the corridors and admiring the decorations teach us how rich and wealthy during Portugal’s age of discovery.

こちらはジェロニモス修道院。黄金王と呼ばれたマニュエル1世の手によって建設された厳かな建物でした。UNESCOの世界遺産指定も受けている場所だけに大人気。回廊の装飾を見ながら歩くだけで、ポルトガル大航海時代の富を感じさせられます。

You can find the tomb of the famous Vasco da Gamba. Luís de Camões, Portugal’s greatest poet, is also buried here.

そして、有名なバスコ·ダ·ガマさんのお墓。ポルトガル史上最大の詩人ルイス·デ·カモンイスさんも眠っていました。

My husband seemed to enjoy the local specialty, Ginjinha. It’s a cherry liqueur served in a tiny chocolate cup, by a local auntie in an old Jewish neighborhood. So cute!

旦那さんは、ユダヤ人街でおばちゃまがひっそりと売っていた、リスボン名物のジンジーナも楽しんでおりました。チェリーのお酒をチョコレートで作った小さなカップで。かわいい。

Here’s another local specialty: dried cod. Apparently, this dried fish was highly valued during the Age of Discovery. And a bit of Japanese nostalgia found at the supermarket.

こちらも名物の干し鱈さん。大航海時代、この干した魚は非常に重宝されたそうです。スーパーでは日本っぽいものにも出会いニコリ。

We also visited Sintra, a summer resort area for the kings and billionaires. It was a little way from Lisbon, which I’ll describe in my next post.

リスボンからちょっと離れた避暑地、シントラにも行ってみましたので、そちらは次回の投稿でご紹介しますね。

What we are eating at home…

毎日何を食べているでしょうか。。。

I love cooking, and I love being able to spend time cooking at home ever since we moved to Morocco. Although there are so many amazing restaurants and cafes near by, we mostly eat our meals at home. I enjoy cooking with all sorts of fresh ingredients available here, especially veggies, which are absolutely delicious!

モロッコに住んでからの食生活。私たち夫婦は基本、家で食べています。夫婦2人だけの生活なので、そんなに量は多く作りませんが、いつも新鮮な食材が手に入るモロッコでは、お野菜系がとにかく美味しいです。

When we have guess to stay with us, I try to serve Moroccan food (Tajine, various kinds of breads, etc.) as much as possible. For breakfast, I often make Japanese Bento Box for our guests.

お客さまがお泊まりに来た時は、できるだけモロッコ料理を出すようにしています。「日本の朝ご飯」を作ることもあり。

Of course, I crave for Japanese food! Since there are no big Asian supermarkets here, I either get a little creative, or make dishes from scratch, so that somehow I can manage to create “nostalgic flavors.” For example, I am happy to be able to make natto myself now!

でも、やはり食べたくなる日本食。アジア系スーパーがないので、ちょっと一工夫するか、スクラッチから作るか、、、でなんとか「懐かしい味」を出せるようにしています。納豆は自分で作れるようになり、今度は、お豆腐作り、梅干し作り、に挑戦したい！

As for “Hiyashi-chuka (cold ramen)”, I learned that “boiling spaghetti with baking soda” makes it like ramen noodle; pretty wild.

冷やし中華も、「スパゲティをベーキングソーダで茹でるとラーメンに！」で。


Grilled fish is definitely one of my favorites. 焼き魚はやっぱり美味しい。

Japanese style curry is something I make often. The regular one (with teddy 😆) is yummy, but I also make Thai style, with coconut milk.

カレーもね、時々食べたくなりますよね。普通のカレーもいいけど、ココナツミルクの入ったタイ風も好き。

I make Gyoza from scratch, and Korean gimbap, too. 餃子や韓国ギンバにも挑戦。

My husband’s speciality: Okonomiyaki! It’s so yummy 🙂  旦那さんは、すっごく美味しいお好み焼きを作ってくれたりします～。


I often try making desserts also.　時には、デザートやケーキも。

For breakfast, I think “natto and miso soup” are the perfect combination; simple & nutritious.

朝ご飯は、「納豆とお味噌汁」が1番しっくりくるかなぁ(モロッコでも）。

When I was living in the US, I didn’t have much time to cook “complicated” dishes. But now, I am able to spend more time in the kitchen, often I get to try out new recipes. My husband’s comments, “it’s delicious! 10 out of 10!” always give me more encouragement — and, just being able to eat together with him is such a blessing.

アメリカ生活の時は忙しくて毎日お食事を作ることはなかったかなぁ。でも今、旦那さんに「おいしい！」と言ってもらえることをはげみにいろんなお料理にチャレンジできること、毎日一緒に食べられること、そんな普通がとても幸せです。

Beautiful Agadir – and Beautifully aging me…

アガディールの思い出

Let’s write about our time in Agadir. アガディールでの時間を綴っておきます。

In January, it rained almost every day in Rabat, which we were happy about (Morocco really needed rain). But, we heard about this “sunny city” of Agadir, and why not? for a weekend trip. It took 1 hour flight to reach Agadir, very well known for its beautiful coastal resort.

１月のラバトはほとんど雨続き！いえいえ、モロッコには必要な雨ですので、よかったのですが、「おひさまに会いたいねぇ」と言うことになり、マラケッシュからさらに南の海岸リゾート地、アガディールへ向かいました。

The first thing I noticed when we got off the domestic flight was, that Agadir airport was full of foreigners! That was because we landed about the same time as flights from the UK and Germany, I think. But oh boy, it was the first “Are we still in Morocco?” experience.

国内線の飛行機を降りてまずびっくり。ガイジンさんばっかり～。どうも、イギリスやらドイツやらの飛行機の到着時間と一緒だったようで、、、「え？ここはモロッコ？」と思うほどでした。

Our goal for this trip was to “seek out the sun and just chill.” So, we stayed at the Iberostar Resort on the beach, using <all-inclusive accommodation>. My husband and I are not quite the “all-inclusive” kind of people, but there is always a first time for everything, non? The second “Are we still in Morocco?” experience happened once we checked in at the hotel. Most of the guests were caucasians, wandering around with beer and wine in hand, and lounging by the pool in bikinis and such.

この旅行は＜おひさまに会いに、ひたすらのんびり＞を目標にしておりまして、夫婦はじめての『All Inclusive Accomodation』なるサービスを使ってIberostar Resort に宿泊。到着してすぐ、またしても「え？ここはモロッコ？」な状態。お客さんはほとんどが白人さん、ビールやワイン片手にうろうろ、プールではビキニ姿でのんびりされる方々。ちょっとしたカルチャーショックでした。

Now, this <all-inclusive accommodation> means a luxurious hotel buffet for three meals a day and never ending snacks and (also never ending) drinks, always available. AND, the drinks mean, anything including alcohol! I don’t drink alcohol, but I know someone who enjoyed it 😎. You can also participate in a variety of activities, such as aerobics, spa service, archery, and the kids’club. I guess it’s kind of like getting on a cruise ship – except we are not on a boat.

All Inclusiveとは、３食ホテルの豪華ブッフェがついていて、しかも、アルコールも含まれている、、、と。そしてエアロビクスやアーチェリーや、キッズクラブなど、さまざまなアクティビティに参加可能。私たちはクルーズ船の旅をしたことがないのですが、たぶん、こういう感じなんでしょうか、ね。

To tell you the truth, we didn’t take advantage of all these services. But, we surely enjoyed our long daily walk on the beach every day. The beach was bustling with activities, with people doing windsurfing and such. The promenade is nicely flat and long, so organized. Even the hanuts (Moroccan convenience stores) are well organized, too. You know where this place reminds me of? Marseille.

このビーチウォークが最高！でした。滞在中、毎日歩いたこの海岸、１月でもウィンドサーフィンやらいろいろで盛り上がっていました。まっすぐで歩きやすく、ハヌート（モロッコのコンビニ）さえも、非常に整頓されていて、ここはマルセイユ？のようなイメージ。

If you head towards the three words on the hill, “Allah, Al-Watan, Al-Malik (God, Homeland, King)” you’ll find the Kasbah (old city walls). You can also take a gondola lift to the top of the hill, which gives you the nicest view of the city.

丘に書いてあるAllah, Al-Watan, Al-Malik（神様、祖国、王様）の３文字に向かっていくと、そこにはカスバ（古い城壁）があります。丘の上にはゴンドラリフトで行くこともでき、ちょっと観光気分。最高の眺めを楽しめます。

On the top, you can visit the old city which was destroyed by the 1960 earthquake. It shows us how they used to live; Muslims and Jews coexisted peacefully here. They were wise – we should definitely learn from them.

1960年の大震災の崩壊跡、イスラム教の人もユダヤ教の人も、平和に共存していた丘の城下町を散策できます。現代人にとっても、学ぶところがいっぱい。

The current souk with mosque. Since it was redeveloped after the earthquake as well, it felt very organized. The city’s infrastructure overall is also very organized and clean. Agadir is surely a city friendly to pedestrians.

現在のスークも、1960年度以降に再開発されているので、とってもオーガナイズされている感じでした。街のインフラもすごくきれい。アガディールの街は歩きやすかったです。

Last but not least, my third “Are we still in Morocco?” moment was the “nightlife” at the hotel. Yes, they provide “Broadway-style” dinner shows with very “Broadway-style” costumes. Almost half-naked male dancers, and very sexy costumes for female dancers. I hadn’t seen these types of entertainment for a while living in Morocco (with rather conservative standard), so it was a surprise. Sorry if I sound like an old, conservative woman – well, I guess I am becoming one (and am proud of it).

そして、もうひとつの「え？ここはモロッコ？」体験。ホテルでは毎晩ライブショーが行われておりましたが、ダンサーさん達の衣装がなかなか、、、西洋でした。久しぶりにみたおねぇさんのおみ足にビックリしつつ、モロッコの保守的な感覚に慣れてきた自分にもビックリ。それともおばさん化したのかしら？順調に歳をとっている証拠です。

It’s been a while!

お久しぶりです〜

I haven’t posted on this blog in a while… I’m going to start working on it again, little by little. Please feel free to drop by.

しばらく投稿していなかったブログですが、また細々とやっていこうと思います。お気軽にお立ち寄りください。

Morocco had a lot of rain in December and January. We needed the rain! So it was a good blessing, but it is also true that there was flooding in some places… I hope everyone was safe.

雨の多かった１２月＆１月のモロッコ。雨は必要！ということで、降ったのはよかったのですが、場所によっては浸水の被害などもあったようで、、、みなさん安全にすごせますように。


Last Christmas, my husband’s brother’s family came all the way to visit us! So we had a fabulous God Jul time with them, and tried our best to make a traditional Swedish Christmas menu.

さて、昨年のクリスマスは、旦那さんのお兄さん家族がはるばるやってきてくれました！と言うことで、スウェーデン伝統料理のクリスマスメニュー、がんばりました。

And for New Year’s, I made Japanese “Osechi” (traditional New Year’s food). Since I couldn’t find all the ingredients, it was a bit of a “makeshift” version, but we were able to welcome the New Year in spirit, I think.

そして、お正月はやはり日本の「おせち」で。食材が揃わない中、かなり”なんちゃって”ではありましたが、気持ち的にはお正月を迎えることができました。

Throughout January, we were very much involved in rooting for Moroccan National Team at the Africa Cup of the Nations! We had fun with the locals at a bar or cheering loudly together in the FanZone. It was so much fun.

１月中は、アフリカ杯で大盛り上がり！地元のバーでローカルさん達と盛り上がったり、FanZoneでワイワイしたり。楽しかったなぁぁぁ。

Oh, and I made some “Victory Headbands” – yup.  そうそう、「必勝はちまき」も作りましたよ。

We spent a few days in Agadir, in search of sunlight & the blue sky. Agadir amazed us, with beautiful beaches and very organized infrastructure. The resort we stayed at had so many visitors from Europe… It was a lovely, relaxing weekend.

ちょっと＜青空＞を眺めに、アガディールにも行ってきました。ヨーロッパのリゾートのような、とても綺麗でのんびりした週末。

Oh, at Agadir airport, I got to meet Assad, the mascot for Morocco’s soccer team. モロッコのサッカーチーム·マスコット、Assadくんにも出会えました。

And my husband got to meet a big duck. そして旦那さんは、大きなアヒルさんに出会えました。

Weekly choir practice, studying French and Darija every day, trying out new recipes & dishes at cooking – something I didn’t have much time to do before back in the US. Often we join some activities through International Club of Rabat, And, spending time walking with my husband, while saying hello to our kind neighbors (both humans and cats)… Days in Rabat flow peacefully with lots smiles, and I am so thankful.

毎週のクワイヤー練習、フランス語とダリジャ語の勉強、今まで時間がなくてやったことのないお料理へのチャレンジ、ラバト国際クラブのイベント参加、そして旦那さんとのウォーキング時間、、、毎日がとても健やかに平和に流れている＜ラバトの日々＞、感謝です。

This year, 2026, seems to be another year of lots of traveling ahead, both business and personal. Inshallah! 今年2026年も、出張やら里帰りやらでいろいろな場所へ旅をしそうな夫婦です。インシャーラ！

Happening soon! Africa Cup of Nations

もうすぐはじまる、アフリカ・カップ

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, organized by the Confederation of African Football (AFFA), kicks off on December 21st. This is the second time the tournament will be held in Morocco. 

１２月２１日からはじまる＜2025アフリカネイションズ·カップ＞。モロッコで開催されるのは２回目、アフリカ·サッカー連盟が主催する2年１度のトーナメントです。

And, the whole city, the whole country, we are all excited about hosting! もう街中がこのカップに向けて準備中！

Four of our stadiums will be used in Rabat. Five other Moroccan cities, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, and Agadir will become the home of the cup.

私たちが住むラバトでは、４つの球場が利用されますが、カサブランカやマラケシュなど、モロッコ内６つの都市がホストとなります。美しい球場のイルミネーションも素敵。


Even the windows of taxis have this design…  タクシーさんのガラスもこのようなデザインになりまして。。。


It’s Christmastime, therefore the coexistence of trees and football; what a creative & tasteful way to decorate the tree! 「クリスマス·シーズン」らしい、ツリーとサッカーの共存！なかなかのセンスです。

Flags of participating countries – 24 of them! They are so colorful and beautiful. I noticed that I was not very familiar with all the designs of flags and their countries. I need to study a bit 🙂 アフリカの２４の国が競うトーナメント。こういったカラフルな旗も街のいろいろでみかけるようになりました。あんまり知らないデザインも多いので、ただいま勉強中～。

This is the elevator of Arribat Center Mall – ya, very much in a mood. 地元のモール内エレベーターもこんな感じです。


And so are the water bottles. カフェで無料でついてくるお水も。

The local tram looks like this too. La Vache Qui Rit (The Laughing Cow) cheese is also selling a “special flavor” for this occasion. Love, love, love. 地元を走っているトラムも、この通り。La Vache qui rit (The Laughing Cow)ちゃんも、スペシャルバージョンを発売中～。この牛さんロゴ大好きな私、たまりません。


Malls and parks have set up “spectator areas” or “fan zones.” Even if you can’t make it to the stadium, you can still experience all the fun and excitement at those places, I bet. モールや公園では「観戦エリア（ファンゾーン）」のようなものが設置されてきました。球場に行けなくても、ここで十分盛り上がれそうな。

Morocco is also going to be one of the countries to host the World Cup in 2030. Moroccans LOVE succor, and beautiful facilities are being built one after another… great for economy & spirit! 

2030年には、ワールドカップをホストするモロッコ。とにかくサッカー熱が高い国ですし、綺麗で新しい施設もどんどんできてきまして、、、経済成長やインフラストラクチャー向上にはもってこいです。そして、何より、このワクワク感はたまりません！

“God Jul” tidings in Rabat

ラバトにもやってくるクリスマス

December is here! My favorite month of the year! Christmas decorations have begun to appear in Rabat – shopping malls, trendy restaurants, fancy shops seem to be excited to decorate with trees, Santa Claus figure, snowmen, etc. Just as beautiful as those in Seattle 🎄. 

１２月になると、ラバトにもクリスマスデコレーションが飾られはじめます。ショッピングモール内や、おしゃれ系レストランやお店には、ツリーやサンタさん🎅🏼、スノーマンなど、アメリカと変わらないくらいきれいです。

Every year, my husband and I cook a Swedish smorgasbord 🇸🇪. The menu doesn’t change for as long as I remember, and it includes up to 15 dishes or so. Yes, it’s a serious tradition. I must say, preparing all the dishes is as much fun as eating them. This year, we will probably skip the ham 😅, but we are planning to make a traditional bread and potato dish, as well as… Glögg for sure :). It depends on how we can gather the necessary ingredients here in Morocco. Inshallah 🙏

我が家では毎年、クリスマスはスウェーデン式のお料理、スモーガスボードをするのですが、今年はモロッコと言うことで、ハム🍖はなしかなぁ、と。でも、伝統的なパンやポテトディッシュなどはしっかりやりたいと思います（そのための材料収集にがんばっております）。スパイス入りホットワインも、、、🍷。

Local churches and American schools here hold “Marché de Noël” during this time of the year. At the market, a large variety of stalls are set up, selling handmade crafts and accessories, some jewelry and even clothings which would make great Christmas gifts. Oh, we were also able to buy some pork bacon! Feels like Christmas IS coming 🥓! The outdoor markets are filled with a festive Jul atmosphere, making me feel like I am in a small European village.

さて、この期間、地元の教会やアメリカンスクールなどで行われるのが『クリスマス·マーケット』。屋台が数々とならび、クリスマスプレゼントに良さそうな手作りのかざりものやアクセサリー、さらには、食材系（豚肉屋さんもいましたよ～）もゲットできちゃう。屋外マルシェの中は、クリスマスムードで盛り上がり、なんだかヨーロッパの小さなビレッジに来ている気分。

Last weekend, we went to a Marché de Noel at the church where I attend weekly for choir practice ⛪️. There, we bumped into the wonderful Sara-san, a lady we got to know through ICOR (International Club of Rabat). She was selling kitchen towels of her own design, and they came with a yummy chicken tagine recipe! Also, a beautiful apron featuring Fatima’s hands – very cool, so attractive, and definitely unique! 

先日、私がクワイヤーで毎週通っている教会でおこなれたクリスマス・マルシェへ行ってきました！そこで、ICOR (ラバト国際クラブ）のイベントでお会いしている、サラさんとばったり。彼女はご自身で考案した＜タジーン料理のレシピが載ったキッチンタオル＞や、ファティマの手がかわいくアレンジされたエプロンなどを売っていました。

I like that the recipe on the kitchen towel is written in English – this would make a great souvenir from Morocco, don’t you think? The red color of the tagine surely adds to the Christmas mood, too. I am a big fan of Sara-san, who is beautiful inside out, and now I’ve become a huge fan of the towels and aprons she creates 💝. 

キッチンタオルのレシピ、英語で表記してあるので、これは良いお土産にもなりそうです！タジンの赤がクリスマスムードまんさいで素敵～。ご容姿も心も綺麗なサラさん、私は大ファンなのですが、彼女の作り出すタオルとエプロンも大ファンになっちゃいました🥰 。

Since joining the ICOR, we have gone on hikes with the members, taken a Darija class, and my husband seems to enjoy Happy Hour a lot. This club, where English is the common language, is also a time for me to take a little break and relax from my every-day immersion in French and Darija. I am very happy that we joined ICOR.

この国際クラブに入ってから、メンバーと一緒にハイキングしたり、ダリジャ語のクラスをとったり、そうそう、ハッピーアワーもあります。このクラブでの公用語は英語です。日頃、慣れないフランス語とダリジャ語を聞いて過ごしている私にとって、このICORでの英語の時間は、ホッとする＆リラックスできる時でもあるんです、はい。

At any special event like Christmas Market, I am totally interested in its food options. We found sandwiches, artisan chocolates, Belgian waffles… yum yum. We chose to try fresh oysters, for the first time in Morocco! They were big, fresh, meaty, and oh so delicious. They cost 10 dirhams each (about $1), and are farmed on a beach in southern part of Morocco. According to the owner, “We grow oysters imported from Japan. Oh, are you from Seattle? Seattle is famous for good oysters, isn’t it?” It was really fun to chat with him. 

話をマルシェに戻しましょう。こういうイベントでやはり気になるのが「お食事どころ」、サンドイッチにワッフルに、、、とありましたが、モロッコではじめて＜生牡蠣＞をいただいてみましたぁ。これが大きくて肉厚で美味しかったこと！ひとつ10ディルハム（1ドルほど）、モロッコの南方にあるビーチで養殖されているそうで、オーナーさんによると「日本から輸入した牡蠣を育てているんだよ～。シアトルも牡蠣で有名だよねぇ！」と。なんだかお腹もハートも幸せ。

We are in the season of Advent, and our Sunday nights start with lighting Advent Candles while watching a live worship service from our home in Seattle 🕯. Our Christmas decorations have not arrived here yet (still in shipment… 🚚) but, thanks to the generous and kind people we’ve met here, I am certain that we are able to spend a special God Jul time in Morocco. Peace on earth and peace be with you all 🕊. 

アドベント（教会カレンダーの降臨節）もはじまり、日曜日の夜はアメリカからの礼拝をライブでみつつ、アドベント·キャンドルを灯しています。モロッコではじめて迎えるクリスマス·シーズン、我が家から送った「クリスマスデコレーション」の各種がまた届いてきていないのが残念ではありますが、、、でも、この国で出会っている寛大で優しい方達のおかげで、特別な時間が送れています。ハンドゥリラ🌍!
